can you imagine how traumatized Clare must be? think about it, Eli was a serious boyfriend of hers. she and him went through a lot together, and there was probably a few thoughts in her head about actually giving herself to him. to have all of that coming from Eli tenfold within a week or something must’ve scared her. again, she’s only fifteen. he was throwing all of her consideration back into her face and it hurt her because it was too much for her at that time. she can’t be expected to fix Eli; she can only try, which is what she’s been doing this half of a season. the night of the dance was probably her breaking point in the sense of her innocence to Eli’s stability and her own awareness to that world.
i liked the ending because i think Clare had the right to try and dance and maintain her sanity in the situation. she’s young and she’s only trying to hold on to that innocence. as much as it may not work, she has to try.
for me, Clare going back to the dance is her trying to retain the normal aspect in her already messed up night / week. she probably doesn’t WANT to dance and have fun, but she has to in order to maintain her sanity. so much has happened to her. she’s only fifteen. she’s still a little girl, in some ways.
